Lightningpaw sniffed the air as his heart raced. How well he hunted today would determine his mentor for the rest of his apprenticeship. His heart leaped at the thought. A mentor! He had always been switched from warrior to warrior to take him out on patrol or fighting practice or out hunting. His thoughts wondered to who his mentor would be, but he pushed them away. he had to focus on hunting first. Sniffing the air again, he caught the scent of a rabbit. That was easy to catch for him, almost too easy. Lightningpaw prowled over the grass toward to smell of the rabbit.
Lightingpaw became still as he saw it sitting and eating grass. He was in a good spot to get it. Silently he raised his haunches and leaped at it. He missed by a whisker and the rabbit fled. Lightningpaw got up and ran after it. It was several minutes before he caught up to it. He leaped again, hitting his target this time. Biting its neck to kill it, Lightingpaw gave thanks to StarClan for giving him the speed to catch the rabbit and for the rabbit. Lightningpaw dug up some dirt and buried the rabbit in it, reminding himself not to forget it. As he buried it, he looked to see if any of the warriors had seen him, but it didn't look like it. He looked around for the other apprentices before sniffing the air again.

Zephyrstar sat in the background, watching and evaluating the apprentices as the hunted. He was also evaluating the warriors; in his head he was looking at what the warriors were most skilled in and what the apprentices lacked most. As his eyes drifted from warrior to warrior, apprentice to apprentice, he caught a glimpse of Lightningpaw. He had missed his prey; yet he ambled back up onto his feet and flew after it again. This time he caught it. After, he proceeded to bury his catch and Zephyrstar smiled; there was just something about the apprentice that made him want to smile. He turned his head to look around again, and there was nothing but silent warriors and apprentices lurking about, waiting to pounce. Zephyrstar sighed quietly to himself. He wanted this, and he knew it. He wanted an apprentice to look up to him, that would learn to be a great warrior from him. But he also wanted one of his own. He thought about how nice it would be to have kits of his own. He shook the thoughts out of his head for a moment, and looked down. A little gray mouse was sitting at his feet, eating a seed from one of the plants nearby. It obviously hadn't noticed him there. With a quick blow, the gray leader landed his paw on top of the mouse, killing it instantly. He buried it close to him, and returned to his duty of watching the others hunt.
